We’re sharing expert tips for a facial at home from owner and founder of The Facial Room, Patricia Asmar. Patricia is a C.I.D.E.S.C.O. trained and internationally certified esthetician with over 25 years in the spa industry!
What’s the difference between an at-home facial and a spa facial?
A spa facial can delay the signs of aging, eliminate blackheads, improve skin elasticity and give you a lovely, youthful, healthy glow. Your esthetician can also help you address any skin concerns you may have. This is thanks to the many years of training most estheticians go through, as well as the highly potent chemical products an esthetician is trained to use.

It’s important, when you are giving yourself a DIY facial, that you go slow and use gentle products, so you don’t damage your skin. Don’t attempt to perform any extractions yourself, as you can permanently scar your skin.
While nothing can replace the experience of a professional facial, an at-home facial can maintain the health of your skin and help you reach your skin care goals.
Step-by-step at-home facial guide
The best time to give yourself an at-home facial is just before bedtime, as this will allow your skin to fully absorb the benefits of each step!
Step 1: Preparation
Just like a good chef gets all of their ingredients ready before starting to cook, setting up all your products and setting the mood with a lovely candle is a great way to start your facial.
You’ll need:
- Washcloths and towels
- Boiled water and heat-proof bowl
- Your favourite candle or diffuser with a relaxing essential oil
Recommended products:
A soothing blend of Lavender, Coconut, and Vanilla.
Step 2: Double Cleanse
Apply an oil cleanser to thoroughly cleanse the skin and remove any make up. Rinse with a warm washcloth. Massage in another cleanser for 2 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

Step 3: Tone
Spray the face with toner or apply with cotton pads.

Step 4: Steam
Cover your head with a towel and steam your face over a bowl of boil water 2 minutes at a time for a maximum of 10 minutes. This will open your pores and prepare your skin for exfoliation and absorption.
Step 5: Exfoliate
Apply a physical exfoliant or leave-on chemical exfoliating peel to gently erase the dead cellular debris build-up and allow your moisturizers to absorb properly.

Apply a thin layer of your favourite masque and leave on for 10 minutes or until dry.

Step 7: Massage
Using a facial oil, massage your face for 5-10 minutes. Focus on upward strokes with your massage to gently lift the skin and help with lymphatic drainage. Gently rinse after your massage is complete.

At-Home Facial Aftercare
1. Keep your skin hydrated
Drink lots of water after your facial, since staying hydrated will prevent dehydration, flush out toxins and help with a healthy, glowing complexion.
2. Exfoliate regularly
Exfoliating regularly after a facial will keep your skin soft and smooth. It can also help prevent dead skin build up which can dull your complexion. But it’s important to wait a couple of days after your facial to exfoliate, as your skin will be more sensitive. Wait three days, and then try exfoliating at least once a week.
